The basic tying technique for men's Haori-Himo

Today, we'll demonstrate the classic basic knot for a man's Haori-Himo.

There are various ways for men to tie a Haori-Himo.
However, in this article, we will introduce the simplest and most traditional method – the so-called "single wrap" basic form.

Normally, men's Haori-Himo are already pre-tied.
They are attached with small S-shaped hooks to the "Chi" – small openings on both sides of the Haori collar.

If the knot ever comes undone or needs to be retied, these instructions can be helpful.

1

Lay both sides of the Haori-Himo straight and neatly in front of you.

2

Form a loop with the right side of the Haori-Himo, holding the end so it points downwards.

Make sure that the attractive front side or pattern remains visible.

3

Now, form the left side as a mirror image of the right side.

4

Place the left loop over the right, so it lies on the outside.

The tassels should be brought together and point straight towards your body.
Lightly hold the center of the overlapping loops.

5

Now, gently fold the middle part of the cord, which is pointing towards your body, upwards and feed it through the created opening.

Refer to the yellow lines in the illustration for guidance.

6

Now, carefully pull the threaded parts and both sides of the cord until the shape is balanced.

If the tassels naturally point towards your body, the shape is successful.
At the end, the tassels point slightly upwards.

Tips for a beautiful shape

At first, it can be a bit difficult to achieve an even balance between the right and left sides.
However, with a little practice, the shape will quickly become more natural.

The version shown here is the simple basic knot with a single wrap.
Depending on the occasion or style, there are also variations with two wraps.

Often, the balance can be adjusted better when the Haori is already being worn.
However, for practice, it can be easier to tie the cord when it's laid out flat.

Feel free to give it a try.
