This antique haori likely dates from the 1920s to the 1940s.
The fabric has a deep blue-violet base tone and is decorated with elongated leaves that recall susuki grass or bamboo leaves. Interspersed throughout are red maple leaves, which give the pattern additional depth and a beautiful color accent.
While floral motifs are often the focus of kimonos and haoris, this flowing leaf pattern appears much calmer and more understated. The combination of the dark blue-violet, the yellowish-golden leaves, and the red accents gives the piece a very elegant yet striking appearance.
The lining also reveals the special appeal of antique haoris. Orange maple leaves and other classic motifs appear against a warm, slightly cream-colored background. The bolder coloring on the inside creates a beautiful contrast to the subtle exterior, highlighting the characteristic charm of antique Japanese clothing.
As this is a longer haori, it is very versatile to wear. Worn loosely over a simple outfit, it looks particularly elegant; styled with a narrow belt, it creates an entirely different, more modern silhouette.
