      Description

An exceptional haori with a magnificent crane motif, presumably from the 1940s to 1950s. Chronologically, this piece falls between antique and vintage and is characterized by a particularly unusual and expressive pattern composition.

The base tone is not a deep black, but a slightly grayish, muted black that makes the red, white, and gold-colored motifs stand out beautifully. The large-scale cranes are complemented in places by fine embroidery. Carefully executed embroidery details can also be seen on the head of the crane in the collar area.

The pattern does not look like an evenly applied print. Instead, the colors and lines show slight irregularities and a lively surface effect, as if pigments or dyes had been applied with a brush. This creates a very painterly effect, which gains additional depth through the partial embroidery.

The light-colored lining is designed to be very restrained compared to the expressive outer fabric. It features a fine woven pattern, providing a calm contrast to the powerful exterior. Due to its age, there are slight discolorations or signs of wear on the lining.

The placement of the motifs is also unusual. Unlike a classic eba composition, the design looks almost as if a large painting had been divided into individual sections and distributed across the sleeves and body. Cranes, pine trees, plum blossoms, and waves are traditional symbols of good luck, but here they are staged in a very modern and almost artistic way.

As the haori does not bear a kamon, it is not a formal ceremonial piece. It was likely worn for special outings, such as visits, celebrations, theater visits, or other somewhat festive occasions.

Even when hung up, this haori has a strong presence. However, when worn, the pattern unfolds in an entirely different way: the movement of the sleeves and fabric constantly changes the image, making it appear particularly vibrant. An extraordinary one-of-a-kind piece that is guaranteed to be memorable on a special occasion.

*The lining shows age-related signs of wear and soiling.
