      Description

Men's Haori from the 1960s to 1970s with an exceptional Bijin-ga motif (depiction of a beauty from classical Japanese art) in the lining.

At first glance, this Haori appears simple and understated due to its black outer fabric. However, its special beauty reveals itself on the inside. The lining features an elegantly executed Bijin-ga depiction in soft, muted color tones. Instead of strong contrasts, the design conveys a calm, almost melancholic atmosphere full of elegance and sophistication.

The motif is reminiscent of the famous beauty depictions by Japanese Ukiyo-e masters such as Kitagawa Utamaro, Torii Kiyonaga, or Hishikawa Moronobu. Particularly interesting is the modern composition: the female portrait appears arranged as if on floating poetry cards or paper strips, giving the design a timeless appeal.

An extraordinary detail is the embroidered embellishments in the depicted woman's hair ornament. They give the motif a fine spatial effect and demonstrate the high craftsmanship of the piece.

The Haori shows age-related dirt, areas where the fabric has become thin in places, and older repair spots. Nevertheless – or perhaps precisely because of this – it possesses a special patina and aura. In Japan, the beauty of age and transience is often appreciated; this atmosphere is impressively reflected in this piece.

When worn, the inner lining usually remains hidden. However, it is precisely in this that a typically Japanese form of elegance is revealed: the appreciation for hidden beauty and details that are not visible to everyone. A characterful Haori for lovers of Japanese culture, collectors, and friends of extraordinary textiles.

*Both the inner lining and the outer fabric show signs of age and wear. In some places, the fabric has become thin. There are older repair spots under both sleeves. The inner lining also shows age-related dirt, as seen in the photos.

These traces tell of a long life and give the piece its special patina and character. Please examine the pictures carefully before purchasing.
