Description
A beautiful black vintage haori from Japan, likely dating from the 1960s to 1980s.
This special haori is decorated with finely embroidered mandarin ducks (oshidori), a traditional Japanese motif of good luck often found on kimonos and other Japanese textiles.
In Japan, mandarin ducks have long been considered a symbol of love, harmony, and a happy partnership. There is also the Japanese expression “Oshidori Fūfu” (mandarin duck couple), which refers to a particularly loving and harmonious married couple.
The mandarin ducks stand out beautifully in warm reddish-brown tones against the deep black fabric. Soft golden-brown shading flows around the birds, reminiscent of a water surface on which the ducks swim peacefully.
Several birds are scattered across the back, while another mandarin duck adorns a sleeve. The generous areas of black between the motifs give the haori a particularly calm and elegant appearance.
The lining is also beautifully designed. Delicate grey plant motifs, reminiscent of orchids or irises, are set against a light background. The soft, flowing lines look almost like traditional Japanese ink painting and beautifully complement the image of a tranquil waterscape with swimming mandarin ducks.
Black haori are particularly popular because they are wonderfully versatile. Whether casually with jeans, elegantly over a dress, or as a special accent to a simple outfit, this haori offers many ways to incorporate traditional Japanese beauty into your own style.
A timeless vintage haori that combines an elegant color scheme, artistic embroidery, and the beautiful symbolism of a traditional Japanese motif of good luck.
