This antique Japanese long haori, presumably from the 1910s to 1930s, is characterized by its magnificent classic patterns and special color scheme.
On the deep reddish-purple to burgundy background, small delicate blue and gray blossoms are scattered across the entire fabric. Overlaid are generously arranged fan motifs adorned with colorful flowers and plants. The blossoms are reminiscent of peonies and chrysanthemums, while other motifs suggest bamboo and pine trees. The interplay of the fine small blossoms and the large fans conveys an impression of the rich, expressive aesthetic of this era.
Although the haori combines numerous traditional Japanese motifs, the overall composition appears surprisingly modern. The deep hue allows the vibrant colors to stand out beautifully and gives the magnificent design a calm, elegant appeal.
The lining provides a charming contrast to the outer fabric. On a natural white background, geometric patterns in orange, yellow, and violet are arranged in horizontal rows. The clear, modern design differs significantly from the floral fan motifs on the outside. It is particularly beautiful when a small part of the lining becomes visible at the sleeve openings when worn, revealing another facet of this haori.
