Description
This antique Japanese haori, presumably from the 1920s to 1930s (approx. 1920–1935), captivates with its extraordinary tulip pattern and expressive color scheme.
Tulip motifs are not very common in antique haori. On a delicate light blue ground, large, stylized tulips unfurl in vibrant reddish-purple, dark green, and white. The lively colors make this piece a special eye-catcher. The outer fabric is made of silk and has a somewhat heavier, textured quality.
The generous stylization of the plants, the striking contours, and the clearly delineated color fields are reminiscent of modern textile design from the Taishō and early Shōwa periods. The black lines almost resemble a silhouette or a stained-glass window: they separate the individual colors and make the blossoms appear particularly clear and luminous.
The lining reveals a completely different, more classic side. Fine woven patterns are visible on a natural white ground, complemented by striking pink swirl motifs. The contrast between the modern tulip design and the traditional character of the lining is particularly appealing. This interplay, in particular, makes the haori so interesting and underlines its unmistakable antique charm.
Worn with jeans or simple trousers, it creates an individual, casual look in which the pattern is particularly well showcased. Over a dress or a more elegant combination, the haori appears expressive and stylish. The slightly heavier fabric quality gives it a beautiful drape.
I would also highly recommend this exceptional piece to anyone who already owns several haori. An antique haori that shows the creative combination of traditional Japanese clothing and bold modern design – and invites you to integrate it into your contemporary wardrobe in a very personal way.
*The outer fabric has some stains in places. The lining also shows signs of wear.
Antique and older vintage haori may show age-related signs of wear. Visible irregularities are described as accurately as possible and documented with photographs. Please consider that these are older or antique unique pieces when purchasing.
