Description
This antique Meisen haori probably dates from the 1930s to 1940s. It is also possible that it was made a little later, closer to the 1950s. However, due to its appeal, material, and design, it is presented here as an antique piece.
The outer fabric has a calm reddish-brown, almost brick-red base tone. Motifs reminiscent of butterflies appear on it. The contours of the patterns appear slightly blurred and show that special, kasuri-like vibrancy characteristic of Meisen fabrics. Despite the restrained color scheme, the haori looks modern, light, and very expressive.
The lining is particularly beautiful. In shades of pink, violet, and red, it displays a lively pattern reminiscent of clouds and bridges. Although it harmonizes in color with the outer fabric, the lining has a very unique, bold effect. The fabric is very thin and fine, giving the haori a special delicacy that is not found in every haori.
The lining shows signs of repairs to holes in places. These traces tell of the long history of the piece and that it was worn and cherished for many years. They are part of the character of this antique haori and make it a special unique item.
Due to its calm rust-brown color, the haori can be beautifully combined with jeans. Simply worn over a simple outfit, it creates a look that clearly differs from a common jacket while remaining suitable for everyday wear.
*The outer fabric has small holes in the area of the side seam and at the shoulder line.
*The lining shows signs of repairs in places.
*Meisen fabrics are still popular in Japan today because of their retro-modern patterns. Please note that Meisen often has a certain firmness and structure. This haori is therefore rather dimensionally stable and does not necessarily lie softly on the body.
