Description
This antique Meisen haori likely dates from the 1930s to 1940s.
Abstract patterns in red, grey, black, and delicate pink are generously spread across the bright, almost white background. The shapes resemble clouds, mist, or flowing water, giving the haori a very modern, graphic look – typical for Meisen textiles of that period.
Meisen is a Japanese silk fabric that was particularly popular from the Taisho period to the early Showa period. It was also worn in everyday life but often featured very bold, modern, and free patterns. Many Meisen designs differ significantly from classic traditional kimono motifs and still appear almost like abstract art or modern textile design today. Even today, Meisen kimonos are very popular in Japan as retro kimonos.
The contours of the pattern show the slightly blurred, kasuri-like effect typical of Meisen. This creates a special depth in the fabric, almost like a painted surface. The combination of red, grey, black, and delicate pink appears vibrant and expressive, yet remains soft and harmonious.
The haori pairs very well with Western clothing. It looks especially good casually with denim or over simple clothes. This immediately creates an individual vintage look with an artistic flair.
*Meisen haori and Meisen kimono often have a slightly firmer, more structured fabric quality. This haori also has a rather firm hand and some body. Please note this before purchasing.
*The inner lining shows slight soiling in places.
*Slight soiling and signs of wear are visible at the sleeve ends.
