Description
A haori from the early to middle Shōwa period (late 1930s to 1950s), made in bright vermillion red and entirely crafted using fine shibori technique.
The dense structure, reminiscent of Kanoko and Hitta-Shibori, forms the basis for the traditional lucky motif Seigaiha – gently flowing waves symbolizing tranquility, stability, and continuity. The pattern is complemented by diamond-shaped floral motifs reminiscent of abstracted chrysanthemums or plum blossoms. Despite the intricate technique, the design appears calm and balanced, rather than cluttered.
The lining is a warm, natural tone with a clean, linear pattern reminiscent of bamboo or lattice structures. This graphic design creates a striking contrast to the organic, soft surface of the outer fabric while simultaneously harmonizing beautifully with it.
Both the outer fabric and the lining feel pleasantly soft. Despite the vibrant color, the haori has an overall soft and flowing appearance, with a particularly beautiful movement when worn. It is not a strictly formal garment, but the fine shibori work testifies to great craftsmanship and meticulous workmanship.
This haori pairs beautifully with modern clothing such as jeans or dresses, stylishly combining contemporary fashion with the atmosphere of a vintage Japanese piece. A characterful garment that evokes history while effortlessly fitting into today's everyday life.
