Description
A haori with a floral pattern on a black background, presumably made in the early to middle Shōwa period (late 1930s to 1950s).
While the classic black background with floral motifs has a familiar feel, these are deliberately distributed across the front, sleeves, and back. The generous use of white space lends the piece a particularly elegant and serene appearance. Accentuating embroideries add subtle highlights and underscore the quality of the haori.
The motifs are reminiscent of traditional seasonal flowers such as chrysanthemums and plum blossoms. However, the restrained, soft color palette makes the design appear less opulent and more balanced and sophisticated – an expression of quiet refinement.
The lining is made of a delicate pink fabric with a fine woven pattern. It forms a gentle contrast to the black outer fabric and lends the haori added lightness and depth. Originally, such a haori was probably worn for occasions that were somewhat more formal than everyday wear. The subtle ornamentation and the deliberate use of white space suggest that it quietly emphasized the elegance and dignity of the wearer. Even today, this piece has lost none of its appeal and blends effortlessly into modern wardrobes.
Whether for more formal occasions or combined with Western clothing such as dresses or trousers – this haori can be styled in many ways and allows for an uncomplicated, yet special way of combining.
